NSW: NSW holiday road toll at 10

SYDNEY, Dec 28 AAP - A man is clinging to life and four others are seriously injured
following a crash north-west of Sydney.
Three helicopters and a fleet of ambulances rushed to the scene of the three-car pile-up
at Howes Valley, north of Colo Heights, an NRMA CareFlight spokesman said.
A car and a utility towing a trailer crashed head-on about 2.20pm (AEDT), and a third
vehicle hit the wreckage, the spokesman said.
Rescuers worked for more than an hour to free the male driver of one of the cars, aged
in his 60s, who was airlifted to Sydney's Westmead Hospital in a critical condition with
fractures and internal bleeding.
A mother and daughter travelling in the same car were also flown to the same hospital
- one with abdominal and chest injuries and the other with only minor injuries.
Another woman and man were airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle with fractures
and other injuries.
Emergency workers initially feared a motorcyclist had been involved, but soon discovered
the bike had been on the back on the trailer.
The holiday road toll stands at 10 following the death of a motorcyclist who ran up
the back of a truck on the M4 yesterday morning.
The 23-year-old underwent emergency surgery but died in Westmead Hospital several hours later.
