FED: Australia contributing to pollution cloud: Brown
The Greens say Australia is contributing to a poisonous, three-kilometre-thick cloudof pollution shrouding southern Asia, but is doing little to stop it.
Australian Greens Senator BOB BROWN says the federal government's record on curbingthis country's contribution to global warming is hopeless, especially with the refusalto sign the Kyoto protocol on greenhouse gas emissions.
A UN-sponsored study says the lives of millions of people are at risk from the cloud,which is a toxic cocktail of ash, acids, aerosols and other particles.
It's damaging agriculture and changing rainfall patterns across the region, which stretchesfrom Afghanistan to Sri Lanka.
While Australia will not be shrouded in the haze itself, Senator BROWN says it willfeel the effects -- including changes in ocean temperatures and rainfall.
