Vic: New remote health tool
MELBOURNE, April 4 AAP - Patients in remote Australian communities can now receiveexpert advice on their wounds from the comfort of their own home under a new telehealthtool launched today.
Under the Alfred/Medseed Wound Imaging System, launched by Victorian Health MinisterJohn Thwaites at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, digital photographs of wounds are emailedto specialists around the country who can diagnose and track the treatment of injuries.
The system, developed by The Alfred in partnership with software designers Medseed, eliminates the need for patients living in remote areas to travel hundreds of kilometresto their nearest hospital.
Associate Professor Nick Santamaria of the Alfred Hospital said the system improvedon existing diagnoses and tracking because it took into account irregularities in theshape and depth of wounds.
Mr Thwaites said the initiative had already been taken up by 30 hospitals and medicalservices in Australia and would free up hospital beds.
He said it would particularly help treatment of chronic leg ulcers and pressure soresprevalent in patients with diabetes and in some remote Aboriginal communities.
